about
Happa continues to re-contextualise and re-make with 'Only Darkness' - the counterpart to 'Only Light' which came out earlier this month. This time, it’s memory - hazy memories from a night out - that he channels, taking the familiar physical elements of various dance music forms and fusing them together to create unfamiliar sounds that reflect his own emotive clubbing experiences.
While 'Only Light' is peak time club euphoria incarnate, a postcard from the dark, sweaty, blissful dancefloor, 'Only Darkness' - Happa’s ‘first song’ by his own admission - provides the inevitable minor key comedown, as disorientating and claustrophobic as a packed dancefloor when you’ve lost your mates. Charlie Steen of post-punk outfit Shameprovides the vocals, a muttered Satanic ritual onto which Happa layers eerie sonic textures, creating an untraversable wormhole that condenses the darker sides of a night out into 4 minutes.
